Congratulations to MJ Martinez for an incredible performance at the USPA FitCon Powerlifting Meet this August in Sandy, Utah! Competing under the United States Powerlifting Association (USPA), MJ delivered a flawless meet-day performance, going 9 for 9 and hitting personal records on all three lifts. This kind of performance is impressive on its own—but even more so while simultaneously pursuing bodyweight goals and maintaining balance across life, training, and nutrition.
After the meet, MJ shared, “So excited — I’m feeling pretty accomplished and proud of myself. I didn’t think I had it in me!”
Coach Natalie echoed that pride, adding, “I couldn’t be prouder of MJ. Hitting PRs across the board is always exciting, but doing it while staying disciplined with body composition goals and showing up consistently week after week speaks volumes about her work ethic and mindset. She is amazing!”
What Happens at a Powerlifting Meet?
A traditional powerlifting meet tests an athlete’s strength in the squat, bench press, and deadlift, performed in that order. Each lifter gets three attempts per lift, with the goal of hitting the heaviest weight possible while following the federation’s rules and commands. The best successful attempt in each lift is added together to create the lifter’s total, which determines overall placing.
Meets require a mix of physical strength, technical precision, mental focus, and strategy. Athletes must time warm-ups correctly, follow judge commands, and make smart attempt selections to ensure a successful meet. Going 9/9—the goal of completing all nine attempts successfully—is considered the gold standard of meet-day execution, showing not only strength but also consistency and composure.
About the USPA
The United States Powerlifting Association (USPA) is one of the largest and most respected powerlifting federations in the country. Known for its emphasis on fair competition, strict but consistent judging standards, and well-organized events, the USPA offers a welcoming environment for both new and seasoned athletes. Divisions range from beginner-friendly to elite-level competition, giving lifters the opportunity to grow within the sport and earn national or even international qualifications.
